Italianate style Victorian homes mirror the Italian villas they are modeled after. Typically only two stories, these homes also feature single-story porches, wide eaves, low roofs, and the characteristic ornamental brackets. If you’ve decided that a Victorian home is right for you, you may also be wondering how to highlight these homes’ unique features.

We’ve consulted with experts for their best design tips when styling the interior, so read on to see what they had to say. All Victorian style homes within the city name or zip code you entered will populate the page, and you’ll be able to begin your search. As with any house you decide to buy, there will undoubtedly be pros and cons. Maybe you’re not a fan of the low ceilings, but the natural lighting throughout the house makes up for it.
History of the Victorian houses
Similar to Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival Victorian homes take inspiration from European churches with their arches and turrets. Romanesque Revival style often features a brick exterior, intricate stone detailing, and a reddish color. Unlike many other types of Victorian architecture styles, Romanesque Revival homes don’t have that characteristic wood trim. Victorian homes have a staple look – ornate exteriors, reminiscent of a castle with large windows.
Things to do in Fresno, CA if You’re New to the City
Queen Anne homes, along with Italianate homes, are widely seen in San Francisco—a result of it being a “boom town” during this time period. The city’s most famous are undoubtedly the “Painted Ladies,” a block of Queen Anne-style townhouses painted three or more colors (you know them from the opening credits of Full House). By far, the city with the most well-known Victorian style homes is San Francisco, CA.
From Alamo Square’s “Painted Ladies,” to Pacific Heights and Bernal Heights, you can find Victorian homes in just about every neighborhood in San Francisco. Whether you’re looking to buy your first home or are fascinated by the popular house styles across the US, a Victorian home should be on your list of must-sees. Find out what makes this style unique and the history that has let these homes stand the test of time.

Yet different architectural styles have influenced the look of Victorian homes, resulting in unique spins on the standard design. Gothic Revival style homes take inspiration from medieval European churches with their steeply pitched roofs and pointed arches. You can also find ornate woodworking details, turrets, and decorative columns or posts. Picture a dollhouse – a colorful exterior, several stories high, gabled roof, highly decorative details, maybe even a tower – and you’ve just envisioned a Victorian style home. From their iconic exteriors, to their opulent interiors fit for a queen, Victorian houses are a unique home style that stands out from the rest. While Victorian houses have many different architectural styles, there are common features you can find among them.
Mansard roofs are a unique 4-sided gambrel roof, often featuring diamond-shaped dormer-style windows. Second Empire homes are also characterized by their square or rectangular base, attic space, and decorative millwork. Bringing together a new culture comprised of a variety of designers, merchandisers, artists and manufacturers from all over the world, Vintage Havana came to life. With a team of poised individuals, each personality brought to the table a new strength. The marriage of music, art, architecture, history, travel and fashion made way for a feminine spirit intertwining with courageous individuality.
You’ll often find crown molding, window and door trim, and intricate staircases. Victorian homes are more formal, so there may be many “parlors” or living rooms, and typically feature a formal dining room. There may also be hidden nooks, balconies, and high ceilings, adding to the grandeur of a Victorian era home.
Queen Anne Victorian house (1875-
Queen Anne Victorian homes are the most famous Victorian style architecture that comes to mind. Often more asymmetrical in design, Queen Anne style homes feature wrap-around porches, balconies, towers, bay windows, pitched roofs, highly ornate trim, and brightly painted exteriors. Stick-Eastlake homes, also just called Stick, share a resemblance to Tudor-style homes with their diagonal, horizontal, or vertical planks (called “stick work”) adorning the home’s exterior. Typically made with wood, Stick-Eastlake Victorian homes are also characterized by their pitched gable roofs, trusses, towers, and embellished trim. Unlike other Victorian style homes, Stick-Eastlake style may not have bay windows and as much intricate decoration.

Various forms of 19th- and 20th-century lighting were on the minds of collectors...
The most common type of Victorian style, the Folk Victorian house, is more simplistic in design. Characterized by their square look, classically detailed trims, gable roof, and front porch, Folk Victorian homes exude the spirit of the Victorian style without the grandeur. Appropriately named, the Octagon style home has eight sides, making homes feel airy and full of light.
They often have low-pitched roofs, a domed shape, a cupola, and a spiral staircase in the middle of the home. Alison is part of the content marketing team and enjoys writing about housing affordability and home interior design ideas. Her dream home is a cottage-style house with a chef’s kitchen and a cozy room to store and play vinyl records. Originating in France, Second Empire Victorian homes are known for their Mansard roofs.
Mass production aided home builders in adding architectural details like intricate metalwork and decorative woodwork throughout homes. While the Victorian home style originated in England, it quickly made its way to many other countries, including the US. From the moment you see a Victorian house, it stands out from the rest with its gingerbread-house-like look and colorful paint. Victorian houses are full of history as most have been around for over a century, so you’ll be living in a home shared by many others before you. As with the exterior, the interior of a Victorian house is equally as ornate and decorated.
These interior and exterior features help tie Victorian era homes together, making them easily identifiable from other home styles. Victorian houses became popular from 1837 to 1901, coinciding with the Industrial Revolution. As new building materials became widely available, builders were able to take a different approach to home design.
The Trump administration and its political allies frequently denounced the BLM movement and offered unqualified support to police, downplaying the extent of police violence. The president threatened to deploy active-duty military units in cities experiencing unrest, and in June a combination of federal law enforcement agents and National Guard members used chemical irritants and physical force to clear peaceful protesters from a plaza adjacent to the White House. The United States was the first country to adopt a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) over 50 years ago, and the law is actively used by journalists, civil society groups, researchers, and members of the public. A 2016 reform law was designed to improve government agencies’ responsiveness to FOIA requests, and reporters and activists were able to use FOIA filings to obtain important documents on the Trump administration that congressional investigators could not access through normal oversight requests or subpoenas.
Twelve Questions for US Presidential Primary Contenders
Democracy’s advocates need to learn from the experience of 2020 and prepare for emergency responses that respect the political rights and civil liberties of all people, including the most marginalized. Multiple military figures were appointed to leading positions on the country’s COVID-19 task force, and the armed services provided essential support in developing emergency hospitals and securing medical supplies. In recent years, observers have raised concerns about the military’s growing influence over civilian governance, and its heavy involvement in the health crisis threatened to accelerate this trend.

It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely. Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits. Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues.

Despite a vote-tabulation process that was lauded by observers as transparent and professional, Trump refused to concede defeat, and demanded a halt to the count in states where the late tally favored Biden. In the weeks after the election, Trump launched continual volleys of fraud allegations focused on pivotal states, and openly pressured election officials in those states, particularly Republicans, to make decisions that would support his claims regardless of the facts and the law. During the counting and certification process and in the period surrounding the formal Electoral College voting on December 14, state election workers reported intimidation and death threats.
Aftercare Support
Its efforts also featured increased meddling in the domestic political discourse of foreign democracies, transnational extensions of rights abuses common in mainland China, and the demolition of Hong Kong’s liberties and legal autonomy. The Trump administration in 2020 intensified its efforts to reduce the number of legal immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented immigrants entering and residing in the country. Such moves since 2017 had in many cases been hasty, uncoordinated, and underfunded, leading to implementation problems as well as conflicts with existing laws, constitutional protections, and international human rights standards. While the administration typically cited exaggerated security concerns as justification for its policies, the COVID-19 pandemic provided a new rationale and helped the administration achieve larger declines in the number of newly arriving immigrants and asylum claimants than had previously been possible. Prior to the 2020 edition, Freedom in the World assigned a country or territory two ratings—one for political rights and one for civil liberties—based on its total scores for the political rights and civil liberties questions.

As part of a condition of the sale, the property is now under a conservation easement with the Los Angeles Conservancy. Moon persevered, though, and eventually rose through the ranks to become chief supervisor of Pittsburgh EMS. Another Freedom House paramedic, Mitchell Brown, went on to become the director of the department of public safety for Columbus, Ohio. The US homicide rate, at 5.0 per 100,000 inhabitants as of 2019, remains low by regional and historical standards, and overall crime rates have declined since the 1990s. However, murder rates reportedly rose by more than 20 percent in the first nine months of 2020, with even higher spikes in a number of large cities. The capital district, Puerto Rico, and four overseas US territories are each represented by an elected delegate in the House who can perform most legislative functions but cannot participate in floor votes.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being. Participants commute to receive treatment such as medication management, 12 Step support, and creative arts therapy.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), faced with the danger that its authoritarian system would be blamed for covering up and thus exacerbating the COVID-19 pandemic, worked hard to convert the risk into an opportunity to exert influence. It provided medical supplies to countries that were hit hard by the virus, but it often portrayed sales as donations and orchestrated propaganda events with economically dependent recipient governments. Beijing sometimes sought to shift blame to the very countries it claimed to be helping, as when Chinese state media suggested that the coronavirus had actually originated in Italy. Throughout the year, the CCP touted its own authoritarian methods for controlling the contagion, comparing them favorably with democracies like the United States while studiously ignoring the countries that succeeded without resorting to major abuses, most notably Taiwan. This type of spin has the potential to convince many people that China’s censorship and repression are a recipe for effective governance rather than blunt tools for entrenching political power.

Freedom House is founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable to their people. We speak out against threats to democracy and empower individuals to exercise their fundamental rights through a unique combination of analysis, advocacy, and direct support to frontline defenders of freedom, especially those working in closed authoritarian societies. The United States has a deeply rooted rule-of-law tradition, and legal and constitutional protections for due process are widely observed. However, the criminal justice system suffers from a number of chronic weaknesses, many of which are tied to racial discrimination and contribute to disparities in outcomes that disadvantage people of color, particularly Black Americans. Beginning in 2017, however, the Trump administration presented a number of challenges to existing norms of government ethics and probity. Anticorruption watchdogs criticized President Trump for shifting management of his real-estate development empire to his children rather than divesting ownership or establishing a stronger structural barrier between himself and his businesses.
Early implementation of expert recommendations, the deployment of masks and other protective equipment, and efficient contact-tracing and testing efforts that prioritized transparency—combined with the country’s island geography—all helped to control the disease. Meanwhile, Beijing escalated its campaign to sway global opinion against Taiwan’s government and deny the success of its democracy, in part by successfully pressuring the World Health Organization to ignore early warnings of human-to-human transmission from Taiwan and to exclude Taiwan from its World Health Assembly. Even before the virus struck, Taiwanese voters defied a multipronged, politicized disinformation campaign from China and overwhelmingly reelected incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen, who opposes moves toward unification with the mainland. In fact, Belarus was far from the only place where the promise of increased freedom raised by mass protests eventually curdled into heightened repression. Of the 39 countries and territories where Freedom House noted major protests in 2019, 23 experienced a score decline for 2020—a significantly higher share than countries with declines represented in the world at large. In settings as varied as Algeria, Guinea, and India, regimes that protests had taken by surprise in 2019 regained their footing, arresting and prosecuting demonstrators, passing newly restrictive laws, and in some cases resorting to brutal crackdowns, for which they faced few international repercussions.

The end product represents the consensus of the analysts, outside advisers, and Freedom House staff, who are responsible for any final decisions. Although an element of subjectivity is unavoidable in such an enterprise, the ratings process emphasizes methodological consistency, intellectual rigor, and balanced and unbiased judgments. More broadly, democracy has demonstrated its adaptability under the unique constraints of a world afflicted by COVID-19. A number of successful elections were held across all regions and in countries at all income levels, including in Montenegro, and in Bolivia, yielding improvements.
The use of military force by authoritarian states, another symptom of the global decay of democratic norms, was on display in Nagorno-Karabakh last year. New fighting erupted in September when the Azerbaijani regime, with decisive support from Turkey, launched an offensive to settle a territorial dispute that years of diplomacy with Armenia had failed to resolve. At least 6,500 combatants and hundreds of civilians were killed, and tens of thousands of people were newly displaced. Meaningful international engagement was absent, and the war only stopped when Moscow imposed a peacekeeping plan on the two sides, fixing in place the Azerbaijani military’s territorial gains but leaving many other questions unanswered. The widespread protest movements of 2019, which had signaled the popular desire for good governance the world over, often collided with increased repression in 2020. While successful protests in countries such as Chile and Sudan led to democratic improvements, there were many more examples in which demonstrators succumbed to crackdowns, with oppressive regimes benefiting from a distracted and divided international community.
Meanwhile, the wage gap between White and Black workers has grown in recent decades, meaning Black women, who are affected by both the gender and racial components of wage inequality, made about 61 cents for every dollar earned by White male workers as of 2017. A popular social media campaign that began in late 2017, the #MeToo movement, encouraged victims to speak out about their experiences. The phenomenon has led to the sudden downfall of powerful men in the worlds of politics, business, news, and entertainment, while underscoring the scale of the problem in American society. An array of policies and programs are designed to protect the rights of individuals against discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, and other categories, including in the workplace. However, women and some minority groups continue to suffer from disparities on various indicators, and a number of recent government policies have infringed on the fundamental rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants.
State Licenses are permits issued by government agencies that allow rehab organizations to conduct business legally within a certain geographical area. Typically, the kind of program a rehab facility offers, along with its physical location, determines which licenses are required to operate legally. With programs in nearly 20 countries, Freedom House offers opportunities to grow within the organization, and to learn from the diverse experience of our domestic and international staff. In response to the death of Russian democratic opposition leader, Alexey Navalny, who died in Russian custody while unjustly incarcerated, Freedom House joins partners in requesting the Biden Administration to accelerate efforts to free imprisoned Russian democracy advocate, Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Meanwhile, restrictions on freedoms of expression and association have worsened over time, pushing the country’s scores deeper into the Partly Free range. The outbreak exposed weaknesses across all the pillars of democracy, from elections and the rule of law to egregiously disproportionate restrictions on freedoms of assembly and movement. Both democracies and dictatorships experienced successes and failures in their battle with the virus itself, though citizens in authoritarian states had fewer tools to resist and correct harmful policies. Ultimately, the changes precipitated by the pandemic left many societies—with varied regime types, income levels, and demographics—in worse political condition; with more pronounced racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities; and vulnerable to long-term effects. The malign influence of the regime in China, the world’s most populous dictatorship, was especially profound in 2020. Beijing ramped up its global disinformation and censorship campaign to counter the fallout from its cover-up of the initial coronavirus outbreak, which severely hampered a rapid global response in the pandemic’s early days.
Freedom House’s analysis of the state of global democracy and extensive work with front-line activists gives us unique credibility to advocate for policies that would reinforce democratic governance in the United States and around the world. We work closely with policymakers to protect human rights and to vigorously oppose dictatorship and oppression. We enable political dissidents and rights defenders to tell their stories to the US Congress and executive branch, the news media, and the United Nations, ensuring that first-hand information reaches decision makers.

This year, our living rooms will still serve as hybrid spaces, but they'll also incorporate a balance of functional and stylistic detail that's living room-specific. Some hallmarks of the coastal grandma home decor trend include white slipcovered furniture, light neutral tones, and natural and organic elements, with an overall relaxed, chic aesthetic. Expect to see less uniformity in 2023 design styles, as designers are embracing asymmetry and mis-matched bedroom, dining, and living room furniture. We’ll also see statement lighting in unique natural materials such as rattan, clay, ceramic, and earthenware fixtures. In 2023, interiors are less about what’s trendy and more about personal expression. Rather than certain trends increasing or declining, we’re seeing different design styles merging.
Trend 3. Natural stone finishes
While I’m not sure if this trend will experience the popularity and staying power of coastal grandmother style, I do like its easy, relaxed approach to decorating. If you’re interested in learning more about coastal boho decor, see my post What is Coastal Cowgirl Style? No matter what decorating style you prefer, every space in your home will always benefit from a touch of black. And, with the current popularity of luxe, retreat-like homes, ambient lighting is becoming more popular than ever. Another great idea for the kitchen is placing a small table lamp on your kitchen counter for ambiance and additional task lighting. Rather, it’s now very common to mix and match metal finishes – not only in the kitchen and bathroom — but throughout the home on surfaces like doorknobs, curtain rods, light fixtures, hinges, and more.
Accessorize with natural materials
“Natural reeded shades, brass finishes, warm bases, wrought iron, and black matte or stone finishes, and details like fluting or sculptural and organic forms are making a presence,” says Hacken. Deep whites and new greige are perfect to pair with a bright or bold color. In addition, warm neutrals can help us slow down in our homes by emphasizing serenity and peace. When mixed with bright colors, they can incorporate joyfulness into our lives.
Natural Inspiration
Instead, dip your toes into maximalism by sprucing up your mantel, walls, or shelves. Traditional seating plans are out, and a layout encouraging in-person conversations are in! These layouts will allow people to sit on their own, but still feel as if they are in a comfortable conversation. Among the favorite living room ideas for 2023, soft curves are playful in a minimalist way. Moreover, they can be calming due to their gentle and inviting appeal to the human subconscious.

26 Beautiful, Timeless Coastal Design Trends For Your Home.
Black accent pieces and hardware are a great way to add contrast, drama, and sophistication to any room, especially when paired with other neutrals like tan and white or rich jewel tones like navy and emerald green. And since natural materials never go out of style, over the last couple of years we’ve seen the use of natural materials in home decor grow to the point where it’s probably no longer a trend. As we update our homes in 2023 and beyond, things like ambient lighting, sound, tactility, and designing indoor and outdoor spaces to encourage restoration and relaxation are becoming more important. Due to manufacturing and shipping delays over the past couple of years, furniture styles for 2023 tend to overlap the trends from last year. That means we’re still seeing plenty of curvy shapes and nubby fabrics, as well as rattan and cane, boucle’ and sherpa, light wood and burl wood finishes. The trendy living room in 2023 draws inspiration from the timeless Renaissance architecture with astonishing arches that evoke grandeur, safety, and exquisite transition from Contemporary to Classic.
But to be both practical and pretty, it’s crucial to find a solution that offers space and style. Living room ideas 2023 will see more furniture and décor with built-in storage. Examples include a coffee table with drawers, wall-mounted cabinets, and chic sideboards.
Exposed finishes, such as cement; concrete-effect paint; and the use of natural coatings, such as clay or lime mortar are also on the rise. The living area of this Gujarat home by SAK Designs is inspired by Mediterranean design and Cycladic architecture. Of course, as is the nature of trends, some will remain ever-enduring year after year, and others, unfortunately, will fall flat. As many of us dream of lazy, far-flung vacations in foreign lands, it comes as no surprise that we are hoping to recreate a global nomad scheme in our homes. International influences abound in 2023, from African weaves and geometrics to palm motifs and vibrant designs from the Americas and India. In recent years, we’ve seen tropical and painterly florals, chintz, and oversized blooms, but 2023 will also see many ditsy, delicate designs emerge, think poppies, buttercups and foxgloves growing wild.
Play with pattern
In her current role, she explores everything from design trends and home tours to lifestyle product recommendations, including writing her monthly column, "What's in My Cart." This trend was so big at this year's Kips Bay Dallas showhouse that we devoted an entire report to it. Next Wave designer Linda Hayslett agrees, saying "fluted and reeded pieces in neutral spaces" are huge right now. While the look was once reserved for small detail areas, we predict next year will see it expand into living spaces, like in this room by Jean Liu. While years past were all about earthy greens, 2023 is here for self-expression. The hue of living room walls influences not only how the space looks, but also how we feel.
With a vintage sofa by Mario Bellini beside a wonderfully blobby cocktail table by Mike Ruiz Serra, we’d wager even Gehry himself would feel right at home here. The term modern can mean so many things, and if you think about it, so can a living room. In this day and age, open-floor plans inhabit the space that smaller, self-defined rooms once did and house living rooms that serve many functions.
In addition to being unique, these pieces reduce waste without breaking the bank. It’s time to give your living room a stylish upgrade because living room trends for 2023 promise an eclectic and swoon-worthy living space. Designer Laura Jenkins was tasked with making the two spaces in this shared living-dining area feel distinct.
Bolder, more exciting shapes and patterns will create bespoke and intimate lounges. For this reason, consider how the piece will fit in with the rest of your furnishings. Clutter-free has been the way to go for years, and sleek storage makes neat living all the more possible.
Our last home had an open floor plan, with the entire living room, dining area, and kitchen in full view whenever someone walked in the front door. Remember, there’s a certain charm and patina that comes with use of natural stone surfaces, so don’t be afraid of the scratches, dings, and stains that are an inevitable part of living in and enjoying your home. The key to a luxurious space is all about mastering the mix of timeless elegance and modern simplicity, creating a space that’s equally welcoming and sophisticated. Fine living doesn’t have to mean fancy or expensive — it’s more about refinement and an elevated approach to how we decorate and live in our homes. Curves don’t stop at the sofa only, as we can see in the 2023 sofa trends.
By we, we mean us – the interior design lovers from a general perspective, and by the upcoming trends, we mean the forecasted tendency with black standout pieces thought to gain strength in 2023. By the way, black units beautifully contrast the usually light-colored background and lend an unusual drama that would be otherwise impossible with light furniture. This trendy feature can be witnessed in professional designers’ customized design projects below. The first masterpiece is a Mid-Century Modern open-floor living room design project that pairs the lounge zone with a bronze-polished dining area and shows a harmonious play of colors and shapes between two different functional spaces. As people continue to spend more time at home, the living room is becoming an even more important space for relaxation and entertainment.
With the right statement lighting, homeowners can transform a simple living room into a stunning and memorable space. They can hide small dents, scratches, or scuffs more easily, which can be particularly useful if you want to maintain a clean and polished look in your living room. Additionally, if your living room has an acoustical issue, such as echoing or sound bouncing, textured walls can help to absorb sound and improve the acoustics of the space. In addition to being a visually interesting design choice, textured walls can also have practical benefits.
